John:
You may be on to something I forgot about when trying to troubleshoot
outside in the cold. The regular wiring diagram has the wire go direct
to the starter from the ignition switch (via the bulkhead conn). But,
there is a supplemental drawing that shows the connection if you
have an auto tranny. In that situation, the wire goes from the ignition
switch, to a relay, and the other side of the relay goes to the
neutral safety switch. The wire is grounded when the tranny is in
park or neutral. Well, my truck USED to be an automatic. When
I converted it, I just grounded the wire that was for neutral safety
to the frame down near the tranny. So I need to check that, and
the relay, etc. Perhaps the ignition switch is not bad.
And for John H., the full solenoid current does not go through the
ignition switch, if you have an automatic. The ignition switch only
activates the relay, and the current for the solenoid goes through the
relay contacts.
