Won't Start

OK digesters, now I need some help. I hit the key,
and the started doesn't even click. The 'Brake Failure'
light comes on. I should point out that this happened
once last summer. At that time, I connected wire
from the starter 'S' terminal, and ran it up near the +
post of the battery. Then I jumped it with the key
in the run position. Drove down to the gas station,
filled up and hit the key, and it has worked right ever
since, never had to use my hotwire, though I left it
in place. So I tried it this time, but it is so cold,
I need to be in the cab to work the choke, but that
wire makes it turn over if I jump it to the battery.
If I connect a meter to that wire, and hit the key, I
get nothing. So I tried the 'bulkhead connector',
disconnected it, shot WD-40 all over the pins,
plugged it back in. Still nothing. But I'll work on it
more tomorrow to make sure.

Could the ignition switch fail on only the 'start' position?
Tomorrow I'll connect the meter to the inside of the bulkhead
connector and see if it is getting any voltage there.
Am I missing anything else? I'd like to really find the problem
this time, rather than always wondering when it will
strike again.
