Re: REBUILDS

Ahem... Steve my man... we aren't trying to build the space shuttle here!
Cryo treating is certainly a wonderful thing, but it's not cheap when you
get into large heavy parts. My feeling is that IH engines normally last
such a very long time as is and the added expense of cryo treatment is not
cost justified. But for those who have everything already and have money
burning a hole in their pocket... it certainly can't hurt. Maybe your
engine will last 400,000 miles instead of the normal 300,000.
>John L are you

Yes. Of all the "extra" things you can throw money it during a rebuild,
I'm pretty convinced that balancing an engine is money well spent...
especially if you start replacing components such as pistons and / or
connecting rods. There's nothing worse that a "buzzy" engine that tries to
vibrate itself to death.
>Gun smiths, who want greater accuracy will have their gun barrels cryo
>tempered!
I've had one rifle done so far, and it did in fact seem to increase the
accuracy by maybe 50%. It's a sporterized 1917 Oberndorf 8mm Mauser
hunting rifle. Before treating it held about 2" groups at 100 yards from
sandbags with handloads. Now it averages about 1" groups. But a typical
barreled action can be treated for less than $50.00. An engine can run
into the thousands!

Again... not cost justified unless you are trying to cure specific problems
*or* you are building a race car... which the IH Traveler isn't.
>Now I have opened up Andorra's box I hope to see some postings very soon.
You undoubtedly will.
