I've had pretty good luck doing the same thing. I drilled right down
through the bolt and extractor, starting with a smaller bit and working up.
Usually, I could finally get a larger extractor into the expanded hole and
then remove the hollowed out bolt. 

But once or twice, when I just couldn't get that puppy out, I went up to
the drill size recommended for the tap and threads for the hole. Then I
just tapped it out. I've even drilled into an aluminum block with a hand
drill and gotten away with this buy using a bit 1/32nd less than the tap
called for and then, very carefully, re-tapping the drilled out hole,
starting with existing threads.
