Oh, and I assume you have an inductive timing light. If enough energy is bled off to fire the wrong plug, it won't trigger the light. So maybe somebody is crossfiring with #8??? Figure out which cylinder is on the intake stroke at that point, pull the plug wire, and see if it just runs rough but the backfire effect goes away.
