auto tranny, when was 727 used?

Howard, I'm not sure this is the complete story:
>Use of the Chrysler automatic transmission started with the 1973 models.
>Prior to this, the automatic was a Borg Warner Model 11, IH code 13039 or
>13049.
I have three reasons that lead me to believe this is only partially true:

1. I have two 1972 Pickups, one 1210 and one 1310, and both have the
Chrysler 727 torqueflight.

2. I have a March 9, 1970 1000D-1200D price list that shows the T-39 for
6 cylinder engines, and the T-49 "(For V-304 V-345 Engines)" and T-409
"(For V-392 Engines only)". And in the price section for 1300D and 1500D
series trucks, it is different. There, the T-49 is listed "For V-304
Engines only)" and T-409 is listed "(For V-392 Engines only)". I'm
not sure where this left a 1300 with a 345, but that is what it says.
I am not positive that the 409 is a Chrsler torqueflight though, do you
have anything that indicates it was?

3. I have a March 20, 1972 price list, and it shows only a T-407
automatic available. This is what both of my '72s have, and it is
the 727. Note that is four-zero-SEVEN, not four-zero-NINE,
as is listed on the 1970 price list.

If you look for rebuild kits for a 727, they are offered for 62-70
and 71-up. The design was changed and the rebuild kit part
numbers are different. I think the T-409 is the older model
torqeflight, matching the 62-70 design, and the T-407 is the
newer model matching the 71-up design.

So, I'd offer the following hypothesis, assuming that a T-409 is
the same basic Chrysler transmission as the T-407:
IHC started using the 727 Torqueflight from Chrysler at least as
early as 1970, beginning with trucks equipped with the 392, and 1300
and 1500 series (heavier weight capacity). By 1972, I suspect that the
727 was standard in all 1100-1500 series Pickups, Travelalls, and Cab
models (1500). Then, in 1973, the Scouts started getting them. So,
I think the 1973 date is true, but only for Scouts.

Note this is only my hypothesis and the above is my research that
leads me to it. If we can really pin this down, it should go in the FAQ.
