Lost Gas Cap Tip

Back when my Scout was new, I had a habit of driving off and leaving the
gas cap on top of the fuel pump at the station. After buying a couple of
new ones, I decided to fix the situation by drilling a hole in the bottom
side of the cap to attach a 20" piece of nylon rope with a sheet metal
screw. On the other end of the rope, I attached a nut from a large bolt
as a weight and dropped it down the filler neck. Now, the cap just hangs
there while I fill up and I haven't replaced it in about 18 years. Some
of us have to be a bit cautious, the cap hangs against the side of the
Scout and could scratch the paint--Dan and some others will view that as
a mark of distinction.
