CLOSE THAT LIFTGATE! Even if your Scout is belching CO like mad under the
rusty body, that liftgate is the primary contributor to your carbon monoxide
poisoning... does your exhaust end at the end-caps? Maybe just out the side
behind the rear tires?

If *any* of your exhaust is making it's way to the tailpipe, you're sucking
it back inside with that open liftgate... BTDT last winter, when my brother
ripped the hinges off my lift gate... I drove for a week w/o a liftgate
while it was being welded up... CO poisoning BAD just on my 10 minute
"commute" across town..

Your other option is to just remove the hardtop. This worked for me this
summer after my V8 swap... I had just stuffed a 25" glasspack on the
driver's side exhaust pipe right off the manifold, and it dumped under the
center of the body tub... no CO until it got cold and I had to button up the
soft-top... then I started suckin' fumes...

Clamp together a new exhaust on that side, new mufflers, and I have a dual
exhaust that dumps outside and behind the truck. :)

But having the liftgate open is having a HUGE impact on your CO levels.. fix
that first and see how bad it is...
