I purchased a custom-built gas tank (~32 gal) from Aero
industries.  They use galvanized steel, but I wonder how
well-protected the welds are since the galvanizing all burns
off.  I have seen ads in the Street Rod magazines for
stainless steel gas tanks.  I wish I had gone that route.
The one I got from Aero has a sump and fuel return added for
my fuel injection and has what they call a skid plate welded
to it.  The skid plate is nothing more than another layer of
16 ga steel welded to the bottom.  It looks pretty sturdy.
I paid over $400 for the tank three years ago.  I can't
imagine stainless steel would be much more expensive.
