Strange Opening in/under Dash

Despite Mother Nature's failure to cooperate I've been making some progress
on L'il Boy Blue (as I've dubbed him). Monday night I used Tal-Strip (tm)
to remove the old finish (yes there still was some) from my new (ahem)
dashboard. Upon doing so I noticed a strange rectangular hole below the
radio opening in the dash: it is about 4"x1" (roughly! - tape measure
missing) and mounting holes on each side (2 total). Anybody know what this
hole is for - mebbe a map light? (Dash is from another '68 Scout 800.)

Also, just FYI: In the last 3 weeks I've managed to install 4 new shocks,
rebuild one of the rear wheel cylinders (left side won't come off, dern it
- help!) and redo the major ignition items (coil, plugs, wiring all the way
to the battery etc.). I would have done more but the pesky urbanites that
surround me open windows and holler at me when I work after midnight <grr>.
:-) Also, I've replaced the radiator with a recore and done a complete
flush/fill/flush/fill job. Fun, fun, fun.
