I think that what you thought was "rubber" was neoprene pipe insulation.
And, I would certianly consider using that with duct sealer (not duct
tape - beleive it or not "duct" tape was not really made for ducting and
it isn't allowed in that use by code. As you mentioned, it dries out and
falls off). It might cost a few bucks but should last for years.
