Rik,

I would take exception to what your welder told you.  Virtually all 
factory welding these days is MIG or TIG.  Stick welding is only used in 
construction or for heavy stuff.  Take a look at the pretty welds done on 
the currenty cars, no way to do this with a stick.  You can see they 
never pounded any slag off.  Besides they don't want to spend the time 
doing it.
