Re: EMP vs RFI....

Speaking of EMP and RFI in that very lame movie staring Howie Long and
Saturday Night Fever guy, they explode a Nuke underground. When the
explosion takes place Howie shuts the engine off in the Jeep he is
driving and waits for the explosion to get over. There is a helicopter
chasing them and it crashes after the explosion, supposidly from the
EMP, then Howie restarts the Jeep and drives off. If he had been driving
a points IH he wouldn't have to go through all that work. (That is just
to make this relevant) The whole consept there is false because it was a
below ground explosion, just shutting off electronics won't protect
them, they need to be shielded, and then starting it back up wouldn't
happen because the electronics would have been toast if it had been an
air burst. Since it was underground there is no EMP.
The concept of using EMP as a stratigic weapon have been in effect
since the early 80's. The offensive portion of the SDI that Reagon
wanted would have consisted of air burst nukes in the upper atmosphere
over the USSR and the Easter Europe battlefields to knock out the
primitive Russian comunications and electronics. All of our newer
equipment was hardened against EMP's therefore the effect would leave
people alive but without the capability of large scale war making. Thus
crippling the commies. We would then drive past the dead red vehicles
and park in the Kremlins front yard. That was the theory anyway. How we
would have gotten off enough EMP producing airburst before the
retalitory strike was one of those questions. Even if the nukes were
satalight launched there would still be a 2-4 minute response window and
sea based subs would be protected from the EMP.
Just something to think about on a slow day.
   Oh, Happy Labor Day all.
