bunged-up spindle threads

Dan:
If the spindle thread damage is not too extensive, it
may be repairable using a thread repair file. These
are usually stocked near the taps and dies at the
hardware store, and there are two versions, fine
and coarse (threads per inch), I think.

They are about 1/2" square with different file teeth
per inch, just find the side that matches the TPI
on the spindle, and file parallel the the threads.
I've used them on several things that were bigger than
any dies I could find without a special order, including
the spindle on my pickup.
