Rik:

The seals I used had no "center" vs. "walls", or "little springs".  They
were like little ruber "thimbles" (but with parallel sides, no taper) with
a hole in the very tip for the valve stem.

The ones I used and was trying to describe were pretty soft rubber --
barely 1/16" thick anywhere on them, I'd guess.

Sounds like you obtained something very different from what I had/have.
