Matt,
I'd bet your thermostat is stuck closed, the coolant in the block 
overheated/boiled and the steam pressure popped your heater core hose, most 
likely the weakest link in your system. Also explains why the radiator cap 
was not hot, no hot water in the radiator, the thermostat wa holding it all 
in the block.  Refer to the current thread on thermostats, and replace 
yours with a qualtiy one.
