But there's nothing new about the concept.  The museum in Auburn just
received two Walker Electric milk delivery vans that were built in 1939. 
They have a 4 cyl. gas engine coupled to a generator in a doghouse in the
front.  Behind this is a completely flat floor.  There is an electric
motor, which I understand is built into the axle housing, that provides
the drive.  They built these units from about 1937 to 1941, but never
revived them after WWII.  I've also heard that Twin Coach tried a similar
drive system in some buses.
