AMC 401s FYI
For those considering a swap to a 401 AMC be advised that they are hard to find now and getting VERY hard to find, also most will not have the crankshaft drilled to accomodate a pilot bushing so if you want a manual trans, you may need to pull the crank to get it drilled => may as well do a full rebuild. They do make good torque and are somewhat lighter than the IHs. The other AMCs are not so scarce and each will make more useable torque (stock) than either a comparable ford or chevy. AMC used a wide variety of other people's parts so certain years will have a GM/Delco ignition while other years will have a Ford/Duraspark, some will have pertronix, motorola, and perhaps Holley. The up side is that alot of parts will interchange between displacements and, from 72 and later, they are wholy interchageable with each other as a unit (401 for 304 is the same as swapping 304 for 304). I've had great success with all the AMC motors and encourage folks considering a swap for their Jeep to stick with an AMC.
Now, who has a 401 they need to get rid of?
