re: expensive adapters

Your reasoning is pretty good and Tom is right about the differences on the
mounting patterns for the jeep/scout dana 300, also the bull gear that
drives the transfer case is different, and therein lies the rub, to install
the Scout D300 into a Jeep you need that gear, available only from 1980,
manually transmissioned scouts. as I understand it, that is the real jewel
in the swap and what is the expensive part. Secondarily you will need your
T18 to mate with your D300, so it ought to come from the same application
(ie jeep or scout), the IH application may, or may not (I don't know for
sure) match the Ford pattern on the tranny side of the bellhousing. The
easiest combo would be the Jeep trans-transfer case with the GM motor, but
I don't remember any t 18s in that lineup, if you use a jeep t18 there are
at least 12 different versions to choose from, that don't directly
interchange. Now you could replace the t4/5 with a T176 which would live
behind the GM motor and would adapt directly to the Jeep D300, no granny
gear but with a 4:1 in the Jeep D300 you have a decent crawl ratio and a
streetable 4 spd tranny too. All that said, you would now have a jeep with
a (shields up!)funny body! ; )
