Getting the transfer case out of neutral

To shift the scout transfer case out of neutral when you
have the auto tranny...

1. Place transmission selector in D
2. Shift the tranny from D to P, Pausing a second or so in
R while applying light pressure to the transfer case handle.
3. Transfer case pops right into gear. Once the tranny is
in P, you can safely work the transfer case handle with a
little more force (or a lot more) if you miss the shift as
the gears wind down.

If you get that clicking noise upon the shift to P, you
either paused long enough in R to spin the transfer case
input the other way, or you didn't pause long enough to get
the input gear to stop spinning. You just need to pause
long enough in R to allow it to engage, and then right to P.
Don't grind the gears, it's way bad on the drive gear. The
D300 is a bit more tolerant than the D20 is to the grind. I
think the clicking noise is hard on the Park pawl in the
transmission, not hard on the transfer case. It's like
putting the tranny into park while still moving.
