charcoal canister

>>I haven't changed the charcoal filter EVER.. nor do I think the previous
owners did (I'm the third!) in it's 26yr life..
>>Someone explain it's operation again? It collects gas fumes from the
carb,
and recycles it back to the gas tank?

Tom, I could be way off here, but as I recall, it does exactly the opposite
of what you describe. I think it collects gas vapors from the tank, then
funnels them to the carb so they can be burned. That's why the canister is
hooked to a vacuum port on the carb. I *think* the hose should go to a
ported vacuum port, not manifold vacuum, but I'm not sure.

I believe it was instituted solely for environmental purposes, but
theoretically it should also provide some mileage gains. Burning otherwise
unused vapors has to help mileage, but I'm sure it's such a small effect
that you'd never notice it.

BTW, my '75 345 SII doesn't have a canister. I don't know if the previous
owner removed it or what, but it ain't there.

Rob
