Yes, it IS a big 4cyl.. and I was actually quite impressed with it when I
bought it.  196, 3spd, 4.09s wasn't much different from my 304/3spd/3.73s..
of course, I can't really get ON IT like I could with the 304.. but it does
respectable.

Hmm.. my sources say 157 lbs-ft @ 2200rpm, with 86hp @ 3800rpm.

Not bad, not great.. it works.

BUT, while I can squawk 'em fairly well on pavement (and *really* bad when
I'm pulling out of Julie's driveway, which has a nice layer of ice at the
very bottom, and one wheel spins up before the Track-lok kicks in and has
the other tire leaving those cursed black marks all over their driveway.. if
they don't kill me for the oil mess, it'll be my tire marks..).

The 196 is underpowered for wheeling, IMHO.  I was going through deep snow,
and I was in 4-lo 1st almost the entire time because I just couldn't spin
the tires in 4-lo 2nd.  I mean, if I let the clutch out in 4-lo 2nd, with
some throttle, it would stall.

Thus, Julie demands a V8 before I hand the '77 over to her.. (oh, and a
front locker.. she wants that front locker..)  I don't know.. it seems to do
well enough in "normal" wheeling in the summer.. 

My other "problem" area is climbing the pass to get out of Helena.. I find
myself all to often stuck at 45mph... top of 2nd, bottom of 3rd, with no
where to go, but just sit there at 45... same on Mullan pass crossing over
to Idaho.

It works.. and it came with the truck.  :-)
