Sounds like it's just the syncros doing thier job - sometimes it takes a
second for the front half of the trans to speed up to where it's
synchronized with the rear half of the trans. You can speed up and smooth
out the shifting process by using your foot on the accellerator to speed
up the engine so the syncros don't have to do the whole job (work on your
heel-and-toe formula 1 downshifting :)). The other thing you can do is try
to look ahead and anticipate when you're going to need to shift down, so
you can shift before it gets really steep.
