oily exhaust, and CB radio
Ed,
From what I can remember of my bud's '80 CJ-7 with the 258,
the head is vertical and comes right off, and you can actually
check the ring wear and cyl wear, and leakdown etc is really easy
since the cyls are vertical too!
First thing is to do a compression test dry, and leakdown test.
Leakdown is the time it takes to lose compression (for whatever
reason) to specified numbers per unit time. Usually every 10 psi
is sufficient. Write down the times, and the trends illustrate
cyl and ring wear. Then squirt about a teaspoon of oil in each
cyl and measure compression and leakdown again.
Generally: Good numbers dry mean good/better numbers wet.
Variances of more than 8-12% between adjacent cyls
are bad!
Variances of more than 25 psi over the whole set are
bad!
If the wet numbers are bad, suspect valves.
If the leakdown is quick when dry and slow when wet,
suspect mild ring/cyl wear.
If the leakdown is slow dry and comp. is good, then
it sounds like a PCV or external system for the
oily exhaust.
If the compression is toast, look for a good J@@p
shop to build it for you. Good cores are easy to
find, and make sure you magnaflux the parts. May
cost you $50 extra but you guarantee that stuff
isn't cracked!
Hope it helps,

Subject: What to do? Oil out the Tail Pipe???
Thanks for all the help with the lift gate I fabricated a part and it
now works...
My current problem is that I and oiling the road. I seem to be spraying
oil on the road from my tail pipe! Where should I look is this going to
be a major and costly problem? I don't have any puddles under my scout
from drips no oil is leaking that I can see it just comes out the tail
pipe. I have a I6 258 AMC its a 1974
If you have had this problem or know the cause please let me know...
Thanks

Bryan,
Go to Radio Shack and get their $29 SWR meter with the bells and whistles.
It's miles better than their $19 meter. Also get the 2ft. UHF(male)-UHF(male)
$4.99 conector cable to hook up the meter. Calibrate and adjust your antenna so
that you get a good reading. No antenna is good right out of the box, changes
in cable length, mounting, and transmitter can all affect performance. The
meter can also be left in the system for a constant measure of performance. I'm
planning on mounting mine, as I have just finished the conduit to my roof rack.
Also try and keep the antenna lead away from AC circuits, ie speaker wires, and
other antennae. Best range I've heard is just under 10 miles.
Also, I believe it is illegal (FCC) to install an amplifier to boost output
power on ANY CB (26MHz) radio set commercially sold. Also if designing your own
set or modiying an existing set, it must be inspected before being used. I
haven't had any actual experience, but I've heard that in some cities there are
'CB' cops, that travel around, lock into signals and drive towards them. If the
power goes up too high, you're busted.
Hope it helps,

Subject: CB Radios
Is there any info or recommendations I can get on CB's? I have the Cobra
148 but I have no range. My guess is the aerial and/or cable is faulty.
Does anyone have a favorite aerial? This weekend one truck had an
amplifier on the CB and it was very impressive. Is this a good idea or
are there any comments?
Bryan
