A buddy of mine got a kit for his 396 Chevelle, it consisted of a jumper
between the battery lug on the solenoid and flat input strap that goes
in the starter, a jumper to the small post on the solenoid that normally
actuates it and a ford style solenoid to put inline on the battery
cable. I guess the stock solenoid must develope a high resistance
connection at high temps, thats all your bypassing with the conversion.
Sometimes you can take the soleniod apart, freshen the contacts, space
the bolt that the main cable attaches too in a little futher. For the
price ofthe kit, I say make your own straps by hammering some copper
tubing flat and drilling a couple of holes, then all you need is a ford
solenoid.
I had a '68 GTO convert. w/455 that had this problem in a terrible way,
the starter was a fairly new rebuilt one with a delco high temp soleniod
so I didn't think it was the problem. The guy I sold the car to said he
replaced the starter and never had a problem again.
