John, I replaced the Prestolite unit in my '78 Scout. That's the all internal one, yes? Only two wires are used. Red to plus, dark (brown?) to minus, white dangling in the breeze. I think the white one is used for the rpm governor. Mine's been running over a year that way. Has anyone found anywhere to buy that thing for under $175?? Doug
