Flame arrester

On my '69 1200 pickup the drivers side valve cover has a "flame
arrester". I've got a K&N filter on the truck now. Because of this there is
no place connect the hose to the air cleaner housing. So I've just got the
hose kinda hangin' out in the open. One guy at Super Scout Specialists said
it wouldn't hurt anything to let it just be "open" like that. Is this true?
I was looking for a 2nd opinion. The valve cover has a screw in type hole,
so I can't just put a breather on it. Is there a breather I can buy that
screws in? Is that the right thing to do? Just thought maybe some-one has
taken care of this themselves. Also, the engine is a 345V-8 if that helps.
