Scout 80 - temperature gauge help

Hello all,

I have been working for some time to try to get my fuel gauge
working on my '65 model 80. Have replaced the senders with
new ones in both tanks, replaced the wiring, and still no-
thing. Started digging through the manual (which I shoulda
done in the first place), and discovered that the fuel guage
is powered off of a "constant voltage regulator" which is
internal to the temperature gauge. (Note ... on this year
scout, both the fuel guage and the temperature gauge sit
inside a 4 1/2" diameter housing on the right side of the
steering column).

According to the manual, I should be getting 5 volts output
from the "A" terminal on the back of my temp guage. (this is
the terminal that is then jumped over to the "A" terminal on
the fuel guage). My voltmeter shows nothing near 5 volts
coming out of that terminal. I opened up the guage, and some
of the internal workings are a bit fried. So, I set about
trying to find a replacement for this temp guage. Coonrods
had the entire housing plus fuel and temp guages used, which
I purchased and tried out. Still nothing... Opened up that
temp guage, and it is obvious that someone prior to me had
tried some different things in there. The whole thing was
fried, and bent up on the inside. (my original one looks
better that this one).....

So, anyway, here is my question.... According to the manual,
these constant voltage regulators can be both internal to
a particular guage, and they can be a separate external unit
as well... Would it be possible to buy an external unit (new)
and simply hook it up to the "A" terminals on both my temp
and fuel gauges??? It's either that, or I continue to search
for the temp guage I need and risk it being in bad shape like
the one I have.

If an external one will work, is it something that I can just
walk into my local kragen and find???

Thanks for your help,
