proportioning valve

Hi All,

I just got a starter for my new scout today from C & W Auto parts in
Phoenix. It set me back $87. That was with the solenoid and auto spacer. I
asked Jerry what it would cost for a brake proportioning valve, and he
quoted a price of $78. My question is--is that a fair price? Is this one of
those things that is an exclusive IH part or is there another brand of
vehicles that has the same part stuck in it? The guy I bought this '77
rust-free scout from had started parting it out and sold the starter and
proportioning valve off of it. And he never even drove the truck to find
out if anything was wrong with it before stealing parts off of it! That's
what happens when you have too many scouts for your own good. He had 5
before he sold me this one. It had rotten tires, so he didn't even try to
drive it.

So, anyway I am looking for a proportioning valve so I can see what else I
need to do for this poor abused scout. I am hoping to try to start it
tomorrow after I put the starter on and drain the gas and put some fresh
gas in it. It sat for six months at least, so I don't know what I will
find. But the seller did say the engine was running okay when he got it and
just parked it. At least it didn't seem to have any leaks under it when I
pulled it out of the place where he had it parked. I am really hopeful that
this was a $500 steal. Anyway, if any of you master mechanix can help me
out on this issue of the valve, I would really appreciate it.
