I once had a Holley 4bbl that did the same thing. I finally decided to
rebuild it, and discovered that the hotshot mechanic I'd bought the
truck from had installed the wrong gasket between the main body &
throttle body when he rebuilt the carb. The gasket he used had a hole
where it wasn't supposed to, that was letting gas from the float bowl
trickle into the intake until the float bowl was empty. I picked up
2MPG (20%) when I fixed it.
Rebuild kits often have 2 or 3 different of each type of gasket, so the
kit can be used for more than one model of carb. You have to carefully
check each gasket against your carb and find the one that has all the
holes it needs, and no extras.
