Mirrors, guns, sockets, axle play

Hello all.
Just a few things. First off, I hadn't even seen a computer since Friday
morning, so I had to catch up on my digests.:) Someone, I don't remember
who, wanted to know about mirrors being used on Scouts. They mentioned
something about the Ford and Mazda "flag" type mirrors. I currently drive
a Mazda pickup (I just drive it to "pickup" parts for my Scout!), and it
has the "flag" type mirrors. They too fold in at higher speeds. I have
tried to tighten the nut, but it only made it worse. I have replacement
that are aftermarket, but I have held off on putting them on, because I
need t drill new holes for them.
Second, a few weeks back, I posted a message about an IH M1 Garand for
sale. Well, as of last Wed it was still for sale. Price: $750, which is
why I can't buy it. If anyone wants to call about it, let me know. It is
around the Indianapolis area. And, John (one of you John's, we need to
start calling you by your last names), don't be too sorry about the post
on the rifles, I was glad to see it, even if it was a little out of
context. Email me and we can discuss it further.
Third, I got the front drum off of my 800 last night. I tried that
exhaust pipe-turned-to-a-socket trick that was posted last week, and
it didn't work as well as I had hoped. I used a vise and squeezed it to
size on two sides. I then took a grinder and started some cuts on the
"corners". I used a hacksaw to cut in about 1.5", and then squeezed it
together to size. I then had a square socket. I used a bench grinder and
ground out notches on two of the sides in the middle, so it would fit over
the points. I need to work on it some more, and I think it would work if
I did. I need to make it smaller diameter further up, and then weld a
bead on the corners to make it stronger. I think it would work then. I
might eventually just weld a bar across the backend of it, so I don't have
to use a pipe wrench, or sacrifice a socket. If you want more details,
let me know.
Finally, the last thing. Since I did get that drum off the front end, I
played around a little bit. My axle has about a half inch of play, in and
out. Is this normal? Should it move this much? If not, what do I do
about it? My friend had his front end apart last spring, and I seem to
remember something about his moving too, I just can't remeber whether or
not it should have.
As always, thanks in advance.

P.S.- Chris - did you want hardcopy pictures via pony express, or scanned
pictures via internet??
