A friend of mine is running 7.5" Contour wheels on his '93 or '94 325is (he
bought my 2 7.5" wheels).
I don't think there's much difference between the M and non-M E36s in terms
of wheel fitment, so I would think the 8.5" would fit the rear w/o rolling
the fenders.
Stock tire sizes from the M3 are 225/45/17 F and 245/40/17 R, FYI.
