re: 2000 M5 oil consumption



One of the English BMW magazines just had an article on buying used current
model M5s. In it they mention two problems with the pre-2000 engines that
might apply.  The first problem was piston rings, which they corrected with
different rings and the second was leaking o-rings on the VANOS units which
was corrected with a seal change of some sort.

Beyond that, I believe that the M-series motors have always been set up on the
loose side.  My wife's '88 E28 M5 has used a quart of oil every 1,000-1,500
miles since new.
