E34 thermostat problem?

Hi,

I've noticed that my new to me '94 525 Touring takes a looooong time to get
to operating temperature.  Somewhere along the lines of thirty minutes.  I
also can't get warm/hot air to blow through the HVAC unit.

I mentioned this to a BMW-owning friend who said it sounds like the
thermostat needs replacing.  Can anyone else diagnose giving the
information?
