Oil Change Intervals...again!

Knowing that what our dads told us about oil change intervals with
regards to mileage and time are probably no longer valid given the changes
in the composition of (non-synthetic) oils and the engines they lubricate,
I'd like to get a sense from the list of what is the maximum TIME interval
between oil changes one should allow?

To be more specific: I find myself rarely using one of our BMWs because
of a company-provided car. I had been changing the oil every 3,500 miles,
which used to occur every three or four months. I just checked and found
that I last changed my oil about 900 miles, but FIVE months ago.

    Should I switch to a time-change interval vice a mileage-change interval
since I'll be racking up so little mileage on this 92 525i with 90k miles on
the clock?

If so, what's a good time interval given today's oils and engines?

    Many thanks,
    Seeker
