Jim,
Yes, the E30 Alpine heads are compatible. 
The premium sound package heads are the same. They just pump the signal to 
the trunk mounted amplifier.

With some wiring you might get an E36 head to work (there were many 
iterations between model years), but I do not believe it is a direct 
plug-in.

I'm not much of an audiophile myself, but those of my friends who are 
can't say enough bad things about OE head units.
I think you would be well advised to shop aftermarket, even though used OE 
head units are really cheap ($50). 
FWIW, I had one a brand new Blaupunkt RPD552 head/CD Player sitting on the shelf after the Xmas party. 
Make me an offer if anyone wants it.
