E30 Alternator/Charging Light

The light in the instrument cluster that displays the "no charge" function 
works intermittently on my E30. Is this a function of a bad S.I. board? When 
starting the car, sometimes the light will come on just prior to turning the 
key to the start position, sometimes it doesn't. At first I thought the bulb 
was burned out. There is no charge function when the light does not come on.
