I just did the brakes on my 528i and on my 1988 325is.  Unless the brakes on 
the 540 are radically different, brakes is brakes.  It's a very simple job.  
I would look at the Bentley E34 manual for tips, but it's a pretty 
straightforward job....the pads can only go in one way.....just do one side 
at a time so that you can refer to the other untouched side in case you find 
a way to screw up.
