I have used a product called "Black Chrome." Works OK on the rubber bumper 
parts too but doesn't last that long on them. The grilles do a little better 
with it. This stuff is not pricey and can be found in many automobile mass 
merchandise stores.

This stuff was really great on mid 80's VWs that needed something.
