Dennis,

Sounds like you are dealing with multiple issues.

The leak sounds like it's unrelated to the running issues.  Yes, the trans 
does have lifetime fluid.  You are more likely noticing a power steering 
fluid leak.  

The whining, rough running sounds like an intake leak of some kind.  Most 
common failure of this kind on your car, is the rear cover for the intake 
manifold.  You didn't mention if the check engine light is on or will flicker 
from time to time.  Why this would make the car feel like that, is the fuel 
mixture is off because you have unmetered air coming in and the oxygen 
sensors can't control the mixture precisely enough to compensate for the 
unmetered air.  This should be more prevalent at lower engine speeds, because 
the air/fuel error will be a greater percentage.
