Without doing some more basic tests very difficult to say. Wishing to keep keep costs down I'd do the
simple things first: How about

Airflow sensor flap  - a well know sticking point at idle - wouldn't hurt to check it anyway and is
easy to do.
(While in there, change the air filter and check the idle bypass valve)
Replace all the plugs - cheap and easy. Plugs have been known to break down under (electrical) load.
Check all coil connections. Run the engine at night in some dark place to see if any obvious HT
electrical "leaks" from the plug/coil leads - rev the engine (keep hands out!). Maybe replace the
coil.
Is the main relay "dropping out" = easy to replace and cheap.
Fuel delivery pressure - getting a bit more complicated now...
