I traced a fuel leak ('89 325i) to a tiny amount of corrosion at the
fuel tank - at the point where the main fuel *inlet* spout is welded to
the tank itself. The fuel leaked at that point, ran down the side of the
tank, went around the curve of the tank and finally dripped onto the
ground about 1/3 the way along the tank itself. There were some white
crystals were the fuel had run - so I guess this had been happening for
some time!
