Factory CD service

I have a '94 525 with the factory in trunk Alpine CD player.
The unit skips quite a bit, both when the car is at rest and while moving.
Has anyone ever serviced their own unit or is there a common problem with
these units?
I'm a former repair tech of consumer electronics (stereos, tv's, vcr's,
camcorders, cd's) so I have the knowledge but no experience with these
particular units.
