Thanks Eric,
The Fuel pump is definately not it. The car drives and gets gas.. if the
pump was gone it wouldnt get any feul at all. it only stalls out when you
are at idle.
If you could take a look at the area where the bentley refers to the ICV
tests and you could e-mail it, I would be really appreciative..
Cheers

Hi Ron -
I just read your follow-up on the digest, and it sounds like you've got
your key problem solved! Great work. As far as the other problem, I wouldn't
rule out something like the fuel pump relay, which is above the fuse box in
the engine compartment. Otherwise, it could also have to do with the ECU,
etc.
Good luck and let me know if I can do anything for you. I brought the
Bentley manual with me to work today, so if you need anything from it, I'd
be happy...
Eric

Ahhh, yes - a visit would be a good idea. Sounds as if I would like
the Toronto area, too. Perhaps one of these days in the not-too-distant
future...

Well I think Toronto is somewhere between what you describe New
Brunswick as, and what you describe San Fran. We are busier than NB that is
for sure. The east coast where NB is is known for thier close knit society.
The economy out there isnt what it is here. However Toronto is still a
good place to live. Relatively clean, and even though there is a lot of
technology here, it hasnt totally taken over.
Best way would be to come for a visit :)

We currently live in Marin County, just a few miles north of the
Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It is actually quite lovely here, but
it is very crowded, traffic is terrible, and everything seems to revolve
around making the most money as fast as you can. Technology has made the
workforce and life in general more complicated, demanded greater
productivity (i.e. more work in less time), and reduced the amount of time
we have as human beings to interact and explore, appreciate, and protect our
environment.
When I was in Canada, life seemed to move at a more reasonable
pace. Technology did not seem to have infiltrated every aspect of home life,
and there was far more space for everyone to enjoy. Granted, New Brunswick
is probably quite a bit less populated and urban that Toronto, but I have a
feeling that even Toronto and its surrounding communities still consider the
idea of community an important one.
Am I thinking correctly, or did I just see one very small part of
Canada that doesn't represent the whole very well?

Hi Ron -
Well, I'll see if I can scan vs. fax the diagrams to you. I
will need to do it tomorrow morning, since I have the book at home and I am
currently at work. Incidentally, I was just in Canada for a photography
workshop. We were on the Kingston Peninsula in New Brunswick - one of the
most beautiful places I've ever experienced. If I could convince my wife,
I'd move our family to Canada!
I'll let you know tomorrow how I'll be sending the diagrams!

Hi Eric,
Thanks for your help,. I am not sure if the ECU is actually
there, I did find an silver box mounted underneath the left side of the
steering wheel under the shroud, and just behind that are the relays I refer
it. I assumed its the ECU since its large enough. I am not positive.
I have the bentleys on order however.
If you could fax it, I would really appreciate the help.
E-mail might be better if you could scan it. Since I am in Canada and
faxing it would be Long Distance for you.
My fax number is the same as my home number 416-537-8624, so
I have to know when you are going to fax.. Maybe an e-mail letting me know
what time, if you dont have a scanner
Cheers

Hi Ron -
I've been reading your dilemma with your E28 still running
after the key is removed. I think, based upon your good troubleshooting
measures, that you are on the right track - it is in a relay, not the
switch. I had a similar situation with the fuel pump relay - the car would
run fine, and then actually stop running right on the freeway! I took it to
a mechanic, who diagnosed almost $2,000 of work on the car. I then got the
Bentley manual, from which I followed the troubleshooting measures exactly -
and it turned out it was a $13.00 relay that was causing the problem. I
replaced it, and never have had the problem since.
Anyway, I would highly recommend the Bentley manual (a
worthwhile investment). I would also be willing to fax you the relay
diagrams from the manual if you'd like. One thing: on my E28 (which is a
528e), the ECU is on the passenger side just above the glove box - you talk
about yours being left of the steering wheel (i.e. driver's side). Do our
cars differ that much in their configuration?
