Brake Lining Light

First let me say, as a new, first time BMW owner of a 1984 325e, I have found
this digest to be very informative.  My "problem" is that my "brake lining "
dash light comes on intermittently and some times stays on for an extended
period of time before going out.  I have check the pads and they are good.
What causes this problem?
