E36 seat belt guide

Greetings,

I'm curious if cracking B-pillar seat belt guides in '96 E36 are a 
safety issue or just cosmetic?  The plastic is cracking around the 
circumference on mine.  I would guess there's a metal ring in there and 
it's cosmetic but wanted to make sure.  It seems I've seen this 
mentioned somewhere before but can't find anything now.
