325xi shifter question

We just purchased a 2002 325xi and before I speak to my dealer, I was
curious what the net.wisdom was regarding the following.

When shifting into reverse, the initial "pull left" is quite hard and
my wife is having problems doing it with one hand.  It is not twice as
hard as on my M Roadster, but definitely harder.

Is this adjustable?  Can BMW put a softer spring in there?  Can I do
it myself?
