<E34> Check control display

Hi.
Recently the numbers in the distance- and tripconter, and the letters in
the check control display in my '88 535i has started to fade away. The
backlight is ok (I've changed the bulbs som time ago). 

I have noticed that they sometimes are completely away, and somtimes
clear and fine as they should be.

Is it a lightbulb that can be changed, or is it a soldering joint that
has to be resoldered?
