My first hand experience from having owned 3 e30's suggests that most ICV's
are not repairable. I was also unable to get any performance change once I
cleaned the ICV. They either worked or did not. The ones I replaced produced
a gradual failure caused by the valve itself loosing the ability to
articulate along the shaft and thus control the idle. Bentley checks did not
identify this as the problem. I found that when the engine was cold meaning
the valve body was cold, it would perform normally but once the engine was
up to operating temperature it would loose the capability to control idle.
I also had a roaming idle caused by the mass air flow sensor not being
precisely adjusted. This caused the idle to hunt up and down which is fairly
typical of these cars and others with Bosch fuel injections systems. My
Porsche did the same thing by the way.
YMMV

It is not from personal experience. It is from some of the comments made by
individuals on the web. It was said that the properties of the cleaners
were destructive to the components inside. I have been searching for the
truth and found no general consensus on this subject. I would not have a
problem with trying a good cleaning assuming, it could be done without
damage. It would be nice to have a smooth idle for a change.

What leads you to say that "bathing the ICV in WD40 or any other cleaner is
a bad idea"?

P.S.: What typically clogs the ICV is the same blow by residue that
deposits on the throttle body and the intake boot. If you've noticed any
oily residue on the throttle body or the AFM, chances are your ICV is also
getting some.
