E36 ASC Warning Lamp

Greetings all! Over the last month my '97 328is developed a
somewhat disturbing habit of displaying the ASC Warning Lamp when
the car is started up in the morning. I live in Southeast
Wisconsin which has seen ZERO snow this winter and the car sleeps
in a heated garage at night. Mashing the ASC button has no
effect, but if the car is shut off and restarted the lamp does
not come back on.
My initial thought was an ABS sensor out of whack, but then why
would shutting the car off and turning it back clear the fault
virtually every time? I guess I just figured if it was flaky
sensor it would behave differently (fault while driving, not go
away just by shutting off the car, etc.).
Any ideas on what to check? Or is it time to make the dreaded
appointment?
